Inquiry into the establishment of a pharmacy council and transfer of pharmacy ownership in Queensland

Nissen, Lisa - Nama Orang;

n Report No 12 - Inquiry into the establishment of a pharmacy council and transfer of pharmacy ownership in Queensland (16 October 2018), the Health, Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee made 11 recommendations relating to pharmacist and pharmacy assistant scope of practice, the establishment of a pharmacy council, the regulation of pharmacy ownership in Queensland and communication of pharmacy services. In their response to the report, tabled on 16 April 2019, the Queensland Government accepted all recommendations in full or in principle.
Within recommendation 2, the Committee recommended that the Department of Health develop options to provide low-risk emergency and repeat prescriptions through pharmacies subject to a risk-minimisation framework. To address this recommendation, Queensland Health was to develop, implement and evaluate a state-wide trial of the management of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by community pharmacists.
The endorsed model of care for the pilot enables Queensland pharmacists, who have undertaken required education and training, to provide optimal, guideline-concordant treatment to women aged between 18 and 65 years of age, presenting with symptoms of uncomplicated UTI who meet strict inclusion criteria and consent to participate in the project.
The provision of three different antibiotics (trimethoprim, nitrofurantoin or cefalexin) is consistent with empirical therapy treatment options outlined in the Therapeutic Guidelines and allows pharmacists to offer the appropriate therapy for patients for whom allergies and drug interactions are considerations, as detailed in the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia Guidance for provision of medicines for acute uncomplicated cystitis in women (the practice standard). The first-line treatment was trimethoprim 300mg for 3 days, second-line nitrofurantoin 100mg every 6 hours for 5 days and third-line ceflexin 500mg every 12 hours for 5 d
